EU EOM Media monitoring results for Guinean Media

The EU EOM in Republic of Guinea-Bissau for the 2009 presidential elections has implemented a media monitoring unit which is operational since 10 June 2009. It is composed by a team of Guinean media monitors, recruited and trained by the Media Analyst. The media unit monitored a representative sample of Guinean state and private media (print and electronic) during the electoral campaign periods for the first and the second rounds of the presidential elections, from 10 to 26 June and from 10 to 24 July, respectively.

The state television station Televisão da Guiné-Bissau (TGB) has been off air for several months due to technical reasons. However, thanks to the Portuguese state-owned television station Rádio e Televisão de Portugal for Africa (RTP - África), TGB was able to offer free airtime to candidates and coverage of the first round of elections through a two-hour free signal relayed by RTP África, although with a delay of few days in the first round of the elections (broadcasting only from 14 June). For the second round, TGB has aired free airtime to candidates during the whole electoral campaign period (10 to 24 July).

Sample of representative Media monitored by EU EOM:

Audiovisual media:

  • state radio Rádiodifusão Nacional (RDN)
  • state television Televisão da Guiné-Bissau (TGB)
  • private radios Galáxia de Pindjiguiti, Rádio Bombolom, Rádio Sol Mansi

Print media:

  • state newspaper Nô Pintcha
  • private newspapers Gazeta de Notícias, Diário de Bissau, Última Hora and Kansaré
  • for the second round of elections the media monitoring unit included in its sample the private newspapers Última Hora and Kansaré

Gazeta de Notícias published only one paper (on 10 July) during the monitoring period from 10 to 24 July.
